The Kentucky Green & Healthy Schools program began in 2007. The program is a joint project of the Kentucky Environmental Education Council and the Kentucky Department of Education.
In 2008, the US Green Building Council awarded KGHS the "Excellence in Green Building Curriculum Recognition Award".
In 2009, the KGHS program was awarded Federal Stimulus funds to help students and teachers focus on energy saving projects.
In 2010, the Kentucky Association for Environmental Education recognized KGHS with the "Excellence in Environmental Education" award.
The program was designed with the following goals in mind:
- Increase environmental awareness and action in communities, schools, and individual students and teachers.
- Increase student empowerment by giving them the tools to make changes at their schools that will benefit both the environment and student health.
- Increase student engagement by offering teachers the tools they need to complete hands-on, inquiry-based investigations and projects with their students.
The Kentucky Green and Healthy Schools Program is committed to providing equal opportunities for all persons regardless of race, color, national origin, age, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, or disability.
